The Auteurs mixed the loud guitars of glam rock with a more quiet and reflective outlook on music more suited to indie rock. The band's fare would draw raves from indie fans initially, though with each progressive album the band's popularity drooped.

By the middle of the '90s, the band had splintered, and front man Luke Haines formed Baader Meinhoff and Black Box Recorder, though a final Auteurs record would surface in 1999.
