>> Elvis Costello
With a continually developing sound, Elvis Costello's sound ranges from the classic pop sounds of his early albums to adult-oriented rock, utilizing string quartets and other nontraditional instrumentation. Costello's early work, originally viewed as punk because his emergence onto the music scene coincided with the genre's rise, would prefigure indie pop acts and serve as an inspiration for many later indie rockers such as the Posies and the Smiths.
As Costello aged his music became more and more esoteric, culminating in collaborations with with Burt Bacharach for Painted From Memory and German Opera singer Anne Sofie Von Otter on For the Stars. A brief reunion with his original backing band, the Attractions, would provide a break from Costello's mature-rock phase in 1994 with Brutal Youth, with a return to straightforward pop.
