Frank Black’s post-Pixies solo work features much of the same flavor as his work with the Pixies as Black Francis, with catchy, mildly distorted guitar work and multi-sectioned arrangements. Attempting to carry the banner as America’s premier indie artist in the wake of the Pixies, Black has mixed success with his attempts, though each album captures the melodies and general feel of Black’s earlier work, both through Black’s songwriting and his trademark bordering-on-whine voice.
