The Get Up Kids punch out emo close to the style of the Promise Ring’s more poppier sounds. With looping guitar harmonies, complex, melodic bass lines and swooping vocal harmonies, the band manages to make a sound more inviting than the standard standoffish emo. However, the band isn’t pure ear candy; its arrangements make few concessions to pop formulas, spinning in offbeat directions and its vocal tracks feature typical emotionally driven lyrics.
