Pushing punk into new directions, Husker Du mixed standard punk trappings with more artistic influences. Growing from a fairly typical three piece playing punk and hardcore into a powerful trio mixing ephemeral, wandering distorted guitars with complexly looping bass lines, Husker Du carved out a sound uniquely its own. While never equaling the power of early British or Californian punk bands nor the self-indulgent artiness marring many classic New York bands, Husker Du successfully fused punk and art rock, helping to lay the groundwork for later indie bands.
