Adding countless layers of feedback on top of distinctly poppy melodies, the Jesus and Mary Chain combined the fury of punk with ear-catching melodies. Instead of emphasizing aggression and speed, as punk rock did, the Jesus and Mary Chain instead worshipped feedback. The mix of blatantly non-commercial feedback-filled sounds with pop hooks would later inspire such acts as Sonic Youth and other indie rockers.
