With a heavier lean toward postpunk avant-garde material, Cave's lyrics delve into obsessively dark and dismal worlds. With time, Cave's work would slowly move away from the sonic assaults of the Birthday Party, shifting closer to art-rock with complex themes and elaborate lyrics.
