The Hush Sound - So Sudden After nearly a decade’s worth of soul-searching and bedroom-moping pop acts, it’s refreshing to stumble upon a band that just wants to make music. The Hush Sound does just that, as So Sudden dispenses the highly fashionable notion that every song must be a comment upon daily life, heartbreak and the human condition with layers of record-collector references imbedded in each bar.

So Sudden won’t win the four-piece outfit any pretense contests, but it works well enough as a straightforward pop album, even if it’s a 100-percent disposable one. Mixing the keys of everything from Ben Folds’ piano pop to the Get Up Kids’ least emo moments with a bit of twee jangle, The Hush Sound wants to be the cutest act vying for your attention in the post-emo pop vacuum.

It’s not nearly as loveable as it needs to be to make So Sudden really come alive, but The Hush Sound’s jangle is still endearing enough to win over fans with a need for crisp harmonics. Guitarist Bob Morris and keyboardist/guitarist Greta Salpeter’s vocals, this album finds a balance between playful pop and delicate bedroom pop. Salpeter’s voice lends itself best to the band’s dynamic, and steals the show in tracks like “Echo,” a sparse, quiet number that relies upon Salpeter’s velvety voice, and “The Artist” a folksy number reminiscent of Frente. Morris steers the band toward more structured and aggressive pop. “Crawling Towards the Sun” revolves around a staccato piano melody while Morris hoots and hollers like a lost emo singer, and “Tides Change” bounces forward on sharp guitars. Morris, for all his enthusiasm, doesn’t have the pipes for straightforward pop, especially the sparse type The Hush Sound plays, making his moments at the microphone the more forgettable of the lot.

The Hush Sound’s ace in the hole is its pursuit of pure pop. So Sudden plays it safe, and opts for melodies and mood over emotionally wrenching tirades, self-confessional moments or any of that other baggage that drags down so many pop songwriters of its generation.
