There's a school of thought among punk's cultural elite that says that every new fad and fashion will be seized upon as the worst development in the genre -- ever -- simply because it's new, it's different and we're not used to it. That way of thinking is only half right: The real reason is that it's really easy to forget how annoying last season's fashions were when you're not hit in the face with them 24 times a day.

Take Senses Fail's sophomore effort, Still Searching for a spin. It'll take you back to a time before Victory Records cornered the market on trite juvenility, when good ol' Drive Thru Records' swarms of pop-punk goofs were bugging the hell out of every rocker with a soul and a set of ears, when pop-punk was pure sugar and every aspiring band threw in a few hardcore-esque screams and breakdowns for good measure. You know, it was the era of Finch, Midtown and another zillion or so others whose name nobody but their parents remembers.

Senses Fail reminds us of just how trite those bad ol' days were. Guitars blaze with full-on candy-coated, fuzz-pedal glory, sing-along vocals that'd be at home at a middle-school sleepover, full of nighties, ice-cream and giggles. Just to make sure things don't get too soft, singer Buddy Nelsen breaks into one of those throat-wrenching screams meant to show us just how hard these pop-punk fluffies can rock. But we learned differently long ago. "Sick or Sane (Fifty for a Twenty)" sprinkles sparkly-clean pop-punk guitars (think radio-friendly and you're there) and nice-guy vocal harmonies on top of churning hardcore beats. "Every Day is a Struggle" and "Still Searching" crank up the volume and pounding rhythms in an attempt to score some cred with the older kids, but the act's cheese-coated vocals and guitar melodies mire it firmly in the pop-punk world. "Can't Be Saved" and "Calling All Cars" cut straight to the point and shoot out as nice and friendly -- and utterly bland -- radio single contenders, while "Lost and Found" goes for the full-on Dashboard ballad.

Yeah, these emo geeks you see running around the mall are annoying, but let's not give them undue credit. They're no more annoying than those baggy-pantsed pop-punk geeks who used to drive around blasting Finch and their contemporaries. Still Searching should be enough of a reminder of that unpleasant fact that anyone should need.
