Progress: It's a time-honored American tradition. We've come to expect that through twin toils of science and industry will improve everything. And if we can't make it better -- or just don't want to figure out a way to fix it up -- we can at least make it bigger. Cheeseburgers are yummy, but that coronary-baiting triple-stack at Wendy's goes large. Who wants a Hummer now that you can park in three or four spaces at once with a massive F-650? Even as we read this, technicians in Apple's labs are cramming more destined-never-to-be-filled memory into massive iPods.

It's probably a given to say that Sonic Youth's masterpiece Daydream Nation can't be improved. The album's already widely accepted as a top-shelf underground-rock treasure, fielding praises from a nearly infinite number of indie diehards, grizzled rock critics and even the Library of Congress, which enshrined the original release last year as one of 50 cultural milestones. And why not? Sonic Youth's avant-garde leanings and pop ambitions recklessly collide all over Daydream Nation. They never fall into equilibrium, either, making it exhilarating even after countless years and countless listens. Sometimes the band's dissonance and melodious nature seem right at home with each other: "Teenage Riot" still stands as a monument to an unflinching noise-pop aesthetic as bursts of raw-nerved sound sear distinctly dream-pop melodies to a cinder. "Eric's Trip" is an almost overwhelming triumph of pop song structures over the elemental chaos of distorted guitars and ambient noises, while "Candle" off-handedly sets the bar for a generation of underground guitar-pop acts with a jangle-to-roar approach that proves art-school tendencies don't have to be overtly challenging.

No, you probably can't make Daydream Nation any better. Hell, Sonic Youth itself spent the past 19 years attempting to and falling short. If you can't improve then, make it bigger -- and Geffen expands the classic with a pile of hard-to-find and live tracks on a bonus disc. It has its moments: The band lets it all hang out in live versions of "Hyperstation" and "Rain King" that throw messy guitars on top of messy guitars and raw energy. A few non-album tracks are even ripped enough for non-Youth fanatics, as the violent, churning "Touch Me I'm Sick" places punk's menace into an art-rock setting without squashing either's ambitions, and the noise-pop anthem "Computer Age" set the table at which Dinosaur Jr. feasted for years.

Demos, live cuts and rarities offer a few interesting glimpses into the Daydream Nation era, but don't expand on its majesty, mostly because the bonus disc retreads the same space as the album proper. We can make Sonic Youth's masterpiece bigger, but we can't make it better -- and, really, Geffen's deluxe edition just makes it almost unwieldy. Daydream Nation is a must-have, but its deluxe edition isn't nearly so essential. So much for progress.

Classic album! The deluxe album for "Goo" was awesome, but the one for "Dirty" not so much. Still, I'm a die-hard Sonic Youth so I'll probably be buying this one as well.
