Justin Moyer sure throws up a lot of smokescreens to distract you from Edie Sedgwick's music. There's the cross-dressing alter-ego. He steals the name of a dead starlet associated with Andy Warhol. He sings songs exclusively inspired by and about celebrity figures. He's putting out Things Are Getting Sinister and Sinisterer out only on vinyl and digitally -- no CDs. There are plenty of things to distract you from Edie Sedgwick's music.

That might make for interesting reviews, but it sure does Moyer's flamboyant alter-ego an artistic disservice. Instead of focusing on all those distractions, we should be zoning in on the really important thing about Edie Sedgwick, and that's the fact that Moyer can write a heck of a pop tune. With or without all the baggage of celebrity-worship politics and identifying with others, regardless of whether he's dolled up in heels and makeup or in jeans, Moyer can write a hook.

Those hooks are what make Things Are Getting Sinister and Sinisterer more than just a talking-point novelty album at your next hipster get-together. Concept will only take you so far, and when that runs out of steam, Edie Sedgwick won't fade away with last year's gimmick bands. "Mary-Kate Olsen" is ostensibly a tune about the malnourished child star, but underneath that, its rollicking stomp-and-clap rhythms and Moyer's kooky, hooky vocals are pop candy. "Rob Lowe" flows on a fluid, funky bass loop as Moyer/Sedgwick gets hyperactively diva-like with his vocals. "March of the Penguins" finds the artist branching into movie-related songwriting, though a stuttering snare beat shows more than assembly-line production under everything Sedgwick does.

There's a lot to intimidate or trip up first-time listeners as they're exposed to Edie Sedgwick, but that's only if they let it stand between them and the music. Throw away all the hype, the eccentricities and the concept, and Sinister and Sinisterer is the sort of no-nonsense pop record that everyone should be able to easily understand.
