Girl in a Coma - Trio B.C. Sometimes, there's nothing so scary as a blank canvas, a clean sheet of paper or a wide-open future. Moving forward, by definition, means eliminating options. People being people, sometimes letting go of those options is a real struggle.

That's the struggle Girl in a Coma is still trying to work through on its sophomore release. The Texan trio returns with another set that's even more directionless than its previous effort, as the act bounces between everything from growling alt-fired hard rock ("Baby Boy") to rockabilly ("BB") to hyperactive jangle-pop ("In the Day"). The band's equally as good at whichever direction it chooses to travel on this album, though it's partially because it never seems more than a mere dilettante as it flits from sound to sound.

Singer/guitarist Nina Diaz delivers solid enough vocal performance to loosely tie everything together. With a musky drawl and a shadow an icy lisp that turns soft s-sounds into a hiss, she has a voice that's as distinct as anyone, and the pipes to make it work. Her vocals make "Static Mind" and "Pleasure and Pain" more than the mere alt-rock rehashings they are. Heck, she even outshines the performance of her label head, Joan Jett, when she steps in to guest on "Joannie in the City."

Without Diaz' vocals, though, Girl in a Coma is a ship without a rudder. It wanders, circles and heads nowhere on Trio B.C.. At first, the genre-jumping is an adventure, but, by this CD's midpoint, you're still left without much of a sense about what the band's all about. It's more than talent and songs that makes a band good. It's a sense of purpose and direction. Girl in a Coma has the first set covered, but sorely needs to discover itself instead of playing about with its styles.

Who's bitter that an all-female trio can rock out in any genre they fuckin' want to? It's Tyler, it's Tyler! GIAC is forever evolving their unique sound, staying true to their inspiration. It's called you know ART! Amazing album and band! Shot out to my fellow Mexicans!

I never liked reviews where the reviewer criticizes an artist or act for having songs in various styles on an album. In all honesty I'd rather listen to an album that has song diversity over those that are predictable and formulaic. With that said, Trio B.C. shows that GIAC are growing as artists.

Tyler are you kidding? This rcord is amazing. What direction are you looking? Put the girls in the catogory of "we can do whatever the fuck we want" and they do it well. Its a spirit called rock and roll. Bad review because you can't fit them anywhere is really fucking silly.
