Vagina Panther - Vagina PantherWhen you start talking about sex, there's absolutely nothing new under the sun. Unless you're a perverted, creative genius, no combination of configurations, locations, positions, props and extra-cirricular add-ons you can dream up hasn't been tried and tested by some frisky sexual forefather or another. Does that make any of your adventures any less enjoyable when done right? Hell no.

Down'n'dirty rock'n'roll is much the same way. Listen to enough albums, attend enough stinky bar shows and read enough interviews, and you'll realize that everything that's pure rock has already been dreamed up and road-tested long, long before it hit your ears for the first time. When it's done right, even when it's predictable, is it any less enjoyable than your utterly pedestrian missionary-position Saturday night? Nope.

That's where Vagina Panther comes in. The act revs up the barroom rock element in nods to all the dive-bar jukebox greats. AC/DC, Motorhead, The Misfits and Led Zeppelin all play prominently into Vagina Panther. While we could crack open a beer and break things down farther than that, tracing riffs back in time and arguing whether each one is more Wayne Kramer or Johnny Thunders, that's missing the point. Vagina Panther's just about enjoying the moment -- so long as you can make it last.

Dead June's sexy female vocals at Vagina Panther's forefront keep some of the trash-rock junk out of the mix, and help the band to do more than just rock your drunken ears off. Not that it has many ambitions beyond drunken ear-rockin', mind you. "Dave, You Are Killing Me" rocks up sleazy blues in the best Zeppelin/Dolls tradition. "I Hate Grass" and "Eye of Inez" are full of rippling muscles and bad-assed beat-downs, perfect for blasting out of the T-top of a rusty Camaro, while "Clean It Up" and "Pressure Check" help chase punk back to its rock-purist roots.

We've seen it all before, sure. That doesn't mean we have to be jaded or condescending about it. Strap on Vagina Panther's debut and rock out, even if it's about as original as a third-date blowjob. Just because it's been done before doesn't mean a skilled operator can't make it interesting, right?

I recently downloaded this album from iTunes after seeing their video. It's excellent from start to finish - just ripping rock n' roll. Can't wait to see them live (hopefully they'll come to Austin) or hear their next record. Please come to Texas!
