X-Ray Specs became the first successful British punk act fronted by a woman, led by vocalist Poly Styrene. Coming into the public eye in the second crop of British punk acts, the Specs stuck closely to the blueprints created by their forerunners, though also managed to twist the sound somewhat, incorporating a saxophone into the band’s lineup. Though critically well received, the band proved unstable and broke apart after a short career.
