Sonic Youth Unveils Matador Debut

Sonic Youth turned in its first album for Matador Records.

The band will drop its The Eternal June 9 from the New York indie label. Recorded at the band's Echo Park studio in Hoboken, N.J., the album features the first recorded appearance by bassist Mark Ibold, who's been holding down the low end on stage with the band for a while now. The Eternal follows up 2006's Rather Ripped (review) (Geffen), and name-checks the former Germs front man in a title, a move that's sure to irk those punk-despising hipsters. It's also the first for the band on an indie in decades: The band stuck it out with Geffen until breaking from the majors to ink with Matador last summer.
