My Chemical Romance Pretends to be Proto-Punk

Nov 23, 2009

Good news for all those people totally annoyed by My Chemical Romance's ongoing attempt to pretend to be Queen: The act has found someone else's legacy to rape for its next album.

Singer Gerard Way told Rolling Stone that the band's new material was heavily influenced by The MC5 and The Stooges, which is a massive change from the Queen influences that ran amok on its predecessor, The Black Parade (review) (Reprise). He also told the magazine that the new album would be the act's "defining work." Then again, he was so bold as to claim one of those horribly melodramatic and self-serving tunes on the last album was the darkest song ever written, so we'd all better take that with a grain -- or possibly teaspoon -- of salt.

Gerard Way is an idiot. My Chemical Romance has no chance of being a credible band. Freddie Mercury laughs in heaven when they try to imitate him. And those emo loses have no chance of being proto-punk. This article is right on track.

Gerard Way needs to learn that it's not up to him to compare his band to great artists of the past like Queen, The Beatles, Pink Floyd, etc. A band should just put their music out there and let fans and rock journalists make those comparisons. For him to tell the world that MCR has written "our Born to Run" (as he said recently in an interview) is totally preposterous. History decides which bands become great, not their pompous, egotistical frontmen. He needs a reality check.

Matt, Sneaky, Roberto, actually the writer of this article actually knows what he's talking about. I used to be a big fan of My Chemical Romance, but honestly the writer is correct, Gerard tends to have a big head in claiming that his band was better than any band that was out there. Not only that, he would claim that the band's music and sound was inspired by so and so, but it doesn't stop there. To this day, he still continues to think that his band is better than everyone else's. To me, Gerard has his head so far up his ass that a lot of people know that his talking about being better is just bullshit in a way to boost his ego. I don't hate him, nor is jealous of him, but if someone in a band does that, that to me says that he doesn't respect the hard work and the dedication that band members put into the music. To me, he just sees it as a joke, and for that, I do not respect anymore who displays that kind of immature, childish behavior. That was part of the reason why I threw all my MCR merchandise in the trash. I lost my respect for that band. To this day, they're still trying too hard to be someone they're not.
